I want to offer a tool that every good technical / system should have in your "toolbox".

When you go to install or maintenance to a WiFi network, it is useful to monitor the airwaves to understand how does the signal of your and other networks and therefore to better accommodate the various parameters and guidelines.

For Windows and Linux (alpha) I absolutely recommend inSSIDer , open-source project rather recent but extremely valuable.

The interface is minimal but full of everything you need:

• Display installed and surrounding WLAN (2.4 and / or 5 GHz)
• Signal strength in dBm, over time
• Channel
• Security protocol
• Manufacturer dell'acess-point
• Filters sorting and searching Highlight
• systems involved (in the case of high concentration)
• * Export of the WiFi and GPS KML (Google Earth)

* The program has the ability (when combined with a GPS) to save the geographical coordinates of hot-spots detected and then see all on Google Earth.
